Toothaches are like asteroids: they may seem like a distant threat at first, but it really hurts when one hits you unexpectedly. While a severe, throbbing toothache is usually the result of an advanced tooth infection that requires the prompt attention of an emergency dentist, you may still need a way to stay comfortable until your appointment. Here are a few home remedies that can help you find some relief from your toothache.

Clove Oil Is an Ancient Toothache Remedy

Clove oil is an aromatic botanical known for several therapeutic effects, and it can be a great way to find temporary relief from a miserable toothache. If your tooth is hurting, soak a cotton ball or gauze with clove oil and place it over the afflicted area. This can give you some much-needed relief while you wait for your emergency dental appointment.

Elevate Your Head While Laying Down

Increased blood pressure can increase the strain inside your distressed tooth, leading to greater discomfort. Since you may have to wait until your dentist’s office opens in the morning before your appointment, you may be able to sleep more comfortably by using pillows or cushions to elevate your head above your heart. This will allow gravity to reduce the blood pressure in your head, which can reduce your discomfort and help you get some much-needed shuteye.

A Saltwater Rinse Can Help in a Pinch

Rinsing your mouth with a solution of one cup water and one teaspoon salt can be an easy way to help clean the infected area and kill harmful bacteria. This can also help reduce inflammation and hasten the healing process of the oral tissues.

An Ice Pack or Cold Compress Can Help You Stay Comfortable

Lower temperatures can reduce the nerves’ ability to communicate, so applying an ice pack or cold compress to the cheek over your afflicted tooth can help reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation. Wrap a bag of ice with a towel and hold it over the pained area for twenty minutes every few hours as needed.

It’s important to see your emergency dentist if you experience a severe or persistent toothache. These home remedies can help reduce your pain until your appointment allows you to find long-lasting relief.
