What Causes Dental Bridges to Fail?
September 29, 2023
If you’ve lost a tooth or two, a dental bridge is an effective solution to fill the gap. Dental bridges are meant to provide long-lasting results, but they will need to be replaced eventually. Here are the most common causes of dental bridge failure and what you can do to get the most from your restoration.
How Long Does a Dental Bridge Last?
The average life expectancy for a bridge is about 5 to 15 years, but it’s not unusual for a restoration to last for much longer. Many factors will affect the duration of your results, like the quality of the materials and your aftercare routine.
Causes of Dental Bridge Failure
Dental bridge failure is inevitable because they don’t last forever. However, many things can cause you to need a replacement sooner, like:
- Poor Oral Hygiene: Dental bridges can’t get cavities, but your remaining teeth are still vulnerable to decay, including those underneath your crowns. Not to mention, gum disease is equally damaging to your dental health. Good oral hygiene is important. Brush your teeth at least twice daily for 2 minutes using a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. Floss at least once a day and finish your routine with an antimicrobial mouthwash.
- Damaged Abutment Teeth: If your abutment teeth aren’t healthy, they won’t provide sufficient support for your bridge. Your dentist will ensure your adjacent teeth are healthy to provide adequate support.
- Bad Oral Habits: Bridges are adorable, but they aren’t indestructible. Crunching ice, chewing on your fingernails, or using your teeth like scissors can damage your restoration. It’s best to break any bad habits that can cause your bridge to fail.
- Low-Quality Materials: Low-quality materials can save money upfront but they may not have the same durability as those that cost more. It’s better to choose high-quality materials to ensure your bridge lasts.
- Bone Loss: Losing even a single tooth can cause your jaw bone to shrink by 25% within the first year because it’s not being stimulated by the root. Your teeth can shift over time, causing bridge failure. A dental implant is the only solution to stop your jaw from deteriorating because it replaces both the root and the crown.
- Irregular Dental Care: Minor concerns can turn into big problems if you don’t visit your dentist regularly. The American Dental Association recommends a cleaning and checkup every 6 months to keep your teeth and gums healthy. They’ll also help you enhance the lifespan of your bridge.
You can enjoy a complete, beautiful smile for years by giving your mouth the attention it needs. If you’re ready to replace your lost teeth for good, ask your dentist about adding dental implants to your smile.
